What should I do if I have a big leak?

For most people, the gut reaction when faced with a major leak is to panic. A better thing to do is learn where your water main shutoff valve is (preferably before the leak!) and shut off the water at the source. If you can’t find the water main shutoff valve, you can also shut the water off at the meter. The leak should stop immediately – then call RAM Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning for emergency pipe repair!

Why are my pipes so loud?

If your pipes are rattling or making other loud noises, it usually means they aren’t properly secured. If your pipes are loose, there could be spots where they rub or vibrate against things like floor joints and make loud noises every time water flows through them. If your pipes are becoming unbearably loud, you can try to find them and add a piece of foam between the pipe and the board to insulate the noise. If this doesn’t work, or if you can’t access the pipes, call RAM Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning!

Why does my hot water smell like rotten eggs?

Foul smelling water won’t actually make you sick – it is harmless and usually caused by hydrogen sulfide. Basically, sulfur and bacteria are present in just about all the water that enters your home. The odor is created when the magnesium anode rod in your water heater tank reacts with the sulfur and bacteria in the water, creating hydrogen that then forms hydrogen sulfide. There are many ways to take care of this, from replacing the magnesium anode rod to purifying the water in your water heater.

What’s this black stuff in my water?

The most common things that form black chunks in the water are minerals such as iron and magnesium, algae, pipe degradation, and resin beads from water softeners. If you have excessive iron and magnesium in your water, all you need to do is install a water filtration system to reduce the mineral count. Resin beads are commonly caused by water softeners, which can degrade over time and leak into your water supply. These resin beads are harmless, but admittedly, no one wants to drink them. Call RAM Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning for water filtration to eliminate any black particles in your water!
